What is Jazz'SAlive?

Jazz'SAlive is the official jazz music festival of San Antonio and is entirely free of charge. The festival began in 1984 and will be celebrating its 35th anniversary this year as one of the largest free jazz festivals in the U.S.

Local, national, and international artists join together to perform a wide variety of jazz styles, including fusion, Latin, big band, and smooth jazz. Jazz'SAlive is a must-see for anyone looking for a bit of fun, food, art, and music.

What should I expect?

When you first get to Travis Park, there is not much parking, so you either have to park on the street or pay $8-$20 for paid parking. There are two stages- the Majestic Theater Main Stage and Paper Tiger Stage- and there will almost always be music playing somewhere. The food and drink vendors usually gather on one side of the park and the sponsor and craft vendors on the other. This year, Bakery Lorraine is visiting the festival with a pop-up café where you will be able to grab pastries and coffee to complement the jazz. When you first get to the park, you should set up your spot in the park. Once you're done, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the music, relax, and have some fun!

Who is performing at Jazz'SAlive?

The festival lineup includes Grammy award-winning artists Jazzmeia Horn and Lee Ritenour as well as jazz bands from local military bases, like the U.S. Air Force Dimensions in Blue Ensemble, and local school bands from UTSA, Brandeis H.S., McNair M.S., and Alamo Heights H.S. What should I bring?

You should bring a blanket or picnic chair, water, cash for the vendors if you plan on purchasing anything, and a good book (if you like to read). Additionally, if you’re afraid of catching too much sun, bring some sunscreen as well.

What other activities are at Jazz'SAlive?

Although music is the main event, Jazz'SAlive has other activities that are great for children and adults alike. The Creative Youth Village features an instrument petting zoo, where children can explore different types of instruments, as well as arts and crafts, a pumpkin patch, and fun games. On Saturday,  Southtown Yoga Loft will be sponsoring YOGA in the Park, where attendees can practice their moves to jazz tunes. Bakery Lorraine is also holding a Pop-Tart Brunch on Saturday featuring their pop tarts, pastries, and quiches alongside the YOGA in the Park the same morning.

Jazz'SAlive offers a combination of food, music, art, and even yoga, which means there will be something for almost everyone to enjoy. Although artists come from around the world to perform, the atmosphere of the festival is what ultimately makes Jazz'SAlive enjoyable, entertaining, and truly unique to San Antonio.
